High school students may participate in the December 5-8 drop-add for second semester. See the drop-add request form for details, including dates and available classes. A university class request form is also available and is needed in order to add a BJU class. Most students who do not participate in drop-add will have a schedule identical to first semester’s schedule. However, some schedules may need to be changed for administrative reasons. Please be sure your child checks for and uses his new schedule for the first day of classes in January. Final schedules for second semester will be available online on Thursday, January 5.
During the week of November 7-11, we will be collecting paper goods for Shepherd's Gate, a shelter for women and children located across highway 291 from campus.
Please get involved in this great opportunity to give to provide for the needs of others! Students in grades K3 through 12 have special opportunities to serve the community through specific ministries during the week of November 7-11.
Elementary students collect nonperishable food items to fill Thanksgiving baskets for needy families. The collection contributes to baskets that the BJU ministerial class will distribute. Nearly 50 families receive baskets each year. For additional details, click here. Middle school students also collect supplies annually for Miracle Hill Children’s Home. Students have provided an average of over 13,000 pounds of goods for Miracle Hill each of the last five years. For additional details, click here. High school students have a paper drive for Shepherd’s Gate, another ministry of Miracle Hill. The high school students provide paper towels, tissues, and other paper products (often enough for nine months of operation)—a wonderful contribution to that ministry. Students will receive specific information at school. We look forward to these opportunities to serve. You won’t want to miss it! Make your plans to attend some of the exciting events at BJU’s Homecoming scheduled for October 20 through 22! This event is open to the community, with special opportunities available for families.
One especially exciting opportunity is U.Day, held from 9 until noon on Saturday, October 22. U.Day is a fun, educational street fair that features dozens of interactive booths—from a snake exhibit to a theatre-makeup demonstration and from a K9 unit, firetruck, and ambulance to a sidewalk chalk competition. The Academy will be well represented at U.Day with a number of booths hosted by elementary through high school students and featuring robotics to high jumps. A soccer clinic (for grades 2 and above) and volleyball clinic (for grades 6 and above) will also be held. Read more about these and other opportunities here. In addition to the U.Day booths, the Academy will open its doors for several events that afternoon. An Academy open house will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Quadrangle (high school buildings). The Class of 2006 will have its 10-year reunion from 2 until 4 p.m. in the Academy Auditorium, and the Class of 1996 will have its 20-year reunion at the Markham Center from 3 until 5 p.m. Read more about the reunions here. We’re looking forward to a great day—hope to see you there! To help with decision making regarding future careers, the the juniors took the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) and the related Find Your Interests (FYI) interest inventory yesterday. ASVAB scores will be available in approximately two weeks. Parents may want to look over the FYI information that the students have as well as the ASVAB scores when the students receive them. Online resources will become available when the ASVAB scores are received. Also available are yesterday’s presentations regarding Career Exploration and Knowing God’s Will.
Juniors are also signing up for small group lunchtime meetings that they will have over the next few weeks with Dr. White and Miss Freeman to discuss preparation for college—from scholarships to majors and more. As always, for students needing one-on-one conversations about college- or career-related matters or other academic issues, parents and students are welcome to consult with Dr. White and Miss Freeman at any time. Because the soccer and volleyball seasons are ongoing and because of the high number of students interested in trying out, tryouts will be held over a two-week period.
Tryouts will begin on Monday and Tuesday, October 24 and 24. Tryouts for students currently on the varsity soccer or volleyball teams (and continuing for those remaining from the earlier tryouts) will be on Monday and Tuesday, October 31 and November 1. To try out for a team, a high school student must have at least a 2.0 GPA (unweighted scale) for the most recent grading period (for the basketball tryouts that will be the grades from the upcoming report card), must have an acceptable disciplinary record, and must have submitted a completed athletic participation form for the current school year. If there are scheduling conflicts for the tryouts for any team, please contact Coach Don Ward in advance. MedEx Academy provides an in-depth opportunity for students to explore healthcare careers and advanced training in healthcare. BJA juniors may apply for the 4-week summer of 2017 MedEx Academy program sponsored by Greenville Hospital System's University Medical Center. An initial informational meeting will be held at noon on Tuesday, October 11, in C-101. For those who are interested in pursuing the opportunity, a more detailed informational meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, in BJU's Howell Memorial Science Building (SC 137). Click here for more information.
Juniors will take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) on Wednesday morning, October 12, beginning at 8 a.m. This three-hour test was originally developed by the Department of Defense to assist in determining qualification for enlistment. Although the test is administered by the military, our students’ scores will not be accessed by the military unless a parent chooses to opt in. If you would like your junior student’s scores to be made available to the military, please contact the academic office by Friday, September 30. Unfortunately, those who do not opt in but later want the military to have the scores will need to retake the test.
Testing covers both broad and more narrowed areas. The broader areas are verbal, math, and science and technical skills. The more narrowed areas are general science, arithmetic reasoning, word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, mathematics knowledge, electronics information, auto and shop information, and mechanical comprehension. Students will also take an interest inventory called Find Your Interests (FYI). Once students receive results from both tests they will be able to plug the results into online career exploration tools which can help as they explore possible college majors. This test is not a pass/fail test. Instead, it results in an opportunity to explore careers that may be good fits for each student based on the results of their aptitude and interest testing. To prepare for the test students should simply get a good night’s sleep and eat a nutritious breakfast. We plan to give juniors an overview booklet ahead of the testing, which students can review with their parents to better understand this test. Juniors taking dual-credit courses that meet during the testing time will choose either to take the ASVAB or to go to the dual credit class. These students and their parents have already been contacted. Students in grades 11 and 12 are invited to be VIP’s at a special opportunity next Thursday, September 15, beginning at 4 p.m. This VIP event is with renowned author, radio host and Supreme Court advocate, Dr. Jay Sekulow. Dr. Sekulow will be on campus as part of BJU’s Presidential Leadership Series. His main address, which is open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. that evening on the university campus in the Founder’s Memorial Amphitorium. VIP registration is required but is completely free. Click here to download a PDF of the flyer below.
For seniors who are interested in the possibility of participating on the 2017 New York mission trip, an important and informative parent meeting will be held on Monday, September 12, in the Academy Auditorium at 6:15 p.m. (just before our regular Parent Night activities). Parents receive information about the trip itself and the preparation process for students interested in participating on the trip. For information as well as photos from previous trips, click here.
