An opportunity awaits all current high school students and rising ninth-graders—speech and debate or mock trial competition! Students in grades 8 through 11 who are at all interested are invited to a meeting on Tuesday, April 25, from 3:30 until 4:30 p.m. in Brown 107. The meeting will introduce students to the world of speech and debate and to the high school team.
This year’s speech and debate and mock trial supper is Saturday, April 22, from 5:30 until 8 p.m. in the Academy Auditorium. All students who competed in mock trial or speech and debate this year will attend, and families are encouraged to attend. Families should bring a meat dish, a salad or vegetable, and a dessert that feeds their family plus two more. Paper goods and drinks will be provided. The evening will feature memories shared from the tournaments attended, senior testimonies, trophy distribution, and more.

The meeting will introduce students to the world of speech and debate and to the high school team. The forensics team is an award-winning speech and debate team that competes on weekends (about fifteen times during the school year) in public and privates schools in a three-state area. Team members compete in debate, public speaking, and interpretation events. In addition to competing locally, the team competes in the state speech tournament and in the National Speech and Debate Association (formerly the National Forensic League) national tournament.
Members have the opportunity to join the National Speech and Debate Association, which is the nation's largest speech and debate organization. The NSDA is an honor society. Students interested in being on this year’s team should attend one of two meetings. Those who competed last year or who attended two or more nights of debate camp this week should meet on Tuesday, August 16 at 3:30 in B-107. Other interested students should attend the informational event that will be held on Tuesday, August 23, from 3:30 until 5 p.m. in the Academy Auditorium. This meeting will include current team members presenting examples of speech events, testimonials, and a PowerPoint illustrating a typical tournament. There will also be a time to ask questions. High school students interested in being on BJA’s Speech and Debate team this year are invited to join an optional but exciting (and free) forensic camp on the evenings on August 8, 9, and 11 from 6 until 9 p.m. each evening in Brown 107. Students (rising ninth- through twelfth-graders, including students new to BJA) may come for one, two, or all three days. Attending the camp does not obligate a student to join the team. Students may wear normal on-campus casual attire (girls, pants; boys, neat jeans) and should bring pen, paper, and any pieces they have to work on. Snacks are welcome but not required!
