BJA will dismiss after a half day of school on Friday, May 5, to allow academy employees and families to attend the 2 p.m. BJU commencement exercises. The elementary, middle, and high school levels will dismiss at noon. See the school calendar on the website for altered schedule details. The CDC will continue as usual for the day. Late stay will be offered at the elementary and middle school levels.
The senior drama class, a.k.a., The Guild Dessert Theater, presents three versions (each version presented by a third of the students enrolled in drama) of “Dinner at Eight, Dead by Nine” on Saturday, May 6 at 5, 6:30, and 8 p.m. in the Applied Studies Building. The mayhem-filled murder mystery will be presented as a modified dinner theater, served by drama class members not in the current version’s cast. For the small price of $5 patrons enjoy the show as well as four cheesecake bites—and coffee and lemonade to wash them down. These $5 advance tickets may be purchased Monday through Wednesday from one of the 34 drama class members or at the Spirit Booth. Unsold seats will be available at the regular price of $7.50 from Thursday through show time on Saturday.
Students interested in playing interscholastic sports (middle or high school level) at BJA next year need to have a physical exam by a doctor sometime this summer and have that doctor complete and sign a portion of the Academy’s Athletic Participation Form. No student may try out or play sports at BJA without a completed sports form on file for the new school year. A form from the current school year will not cover a student in the fall. Forms are available at school and on the Docs page accessible from the Resources link on the BJA website.
This year’s speech and debate and mock trial supper is Saturday, April 22, from 5:30 until 8 p.m. in the Academy Auditorium. All students who competed in mock trial or speech and debate this year will attend, and families are encouraged to attend. Families should bring a meat dish, a salad or vegetable, and a dessert that feeds their family plus two more. Paper goods and drinks will be provided. The evening will feature memories shared from the tournaments attended, senior testimonies, trophy distribution, and more.
An opportunity awaits all current high school students and rising ninth-graders—speech and debate or mock trial competition! Students in grades 8 through 11 who are at all interested are invited to a meeting on Tuesday, April 25, from 3:30 until 4:30 p.m. in Brown 107. The meeting will introduce students to the world of speech and debate and to the high school team. Parents and students can view summer registration and fall course requests in NetClassroom. To view summer school registration go to NetClassroom, select the student name, click registration/schedule, and choose the 2017–2018 academic year and summer session in the sidebar.
To view fall course requests, go to NetClassroom and click Registration/Enter Requests. An approval option appears but is not needed; please use the change request form (available on the Docs page accessible from the Resources link on the BJA website) to request changes. The Junior-Senior banquet, a highlight for our juniors and seniors as we head toward graduation, will be held on Thursday, April 13, in the Academy Auditorium. Students should arrive at the quadrangle between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. to receive their table assignments for the evening’s event, which is a formal affair. Although the program will end around 10 p.m., there will be desserts and fellowship in the Quadrangle until 11 p.m. We are looking forward to the wonderful memories that this evening creates for our students as the year draws quickly to a close.
The Junior-Senior banquet play dress rehearsal will be on Tuesday, April 11, at 8:15 p.m. (following the registration meeting) in the Academy Auditorium—and we need an audience! Anyone, except for BJA juniors and seniors (who will see the play during the banquet) is invited to attend this one-hour play. The play will also be presented to a full house of the middle and high school students on Monday, April 17. Registration for Summer School
Summer school registration begins Wednesday, April 12. A parent may request a summer class for his/her student by selecting the link that will be available in NetClassroom at that time. In general, this is a first-come process. To confirm that your student holds a seat in a class, check his/her NetClassroom summer schedule one full workday after you submit the request online. A waiting list will immediately be created for those who are not able to get into the preferred summer class. The academic office will contact a parent whose student did not get into the desired course. Summer registration will be available online through April 14. After April 14, please contact the academic office. Summer school information is available here. Registration for Fall Courses A parent meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the middle school cafeteria. We will not only cover the registration process but will also provide an overview of academic information that is important for parents of high school students. High school and middle school students will receive an overview in assemblies on Wednesday, April 12. If you have additional questions after the parent meeting, please take advantage of a special Coffee with the Advisors on Wednesday, April 12, and Monday, April 17, in the Markham Center. Drop in anytime from 3 to 5 p.m. either of those days. We look forward to seeing you there! Registration for fall courses, music lessons, and dual-credit classes is April 18 through 21.
Placement Tests for Foreign Language College Classes If your student is planning to take a college foreign language class of any level, even beginner-level, a placement test must be taken. The test takes approximately 10 to 30 minutes and will be given in the H-205 computer lab on April 25 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Part-Time Students Part-time students should follow the registration procedures above and come at one of the times listed below.
Change Requests Parents will be able to immediately view the student’s course requests in NetClassroom. If changes are needed, use a Change Request Form (which will be available on the Docs page).
On Monday and Tuesday, April 10 and 11, sophomores will take several portions of their achievement tests during their regular class hour for English 10.
On Thursday, April 13, freshmen and sophomores will have a full day of testing. Testing will begin promptly at 8 a.m. and conclude by 3:10 p.m. Room assignments will be posted on the bulletin board in Academy Main on Wednesday, April 12. Please make sure your student brings #2 lead pencils to the test on Thursday. A calculator without graphing capabilities is permitted for the test. Students may think that having less homework because of the testing is a reason to stay up late and get up late, but studies have found that a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast are important components in their performing at an optimum level. Interscholastic boys soccer and girls volleyball tryouts and practices for the 2017-2018 school year will begin on Monday, August 7, for both middle and high school teams. Attendance at tryouts and practices is required for students who would like to be on a team. If there are scheduling conflicts, please contact Mr. Steve Tompkins, interim athletic director.
Cheerleading clinics begin on Monday, May 1. Students should plan to attend as many of the clinics as possible that do not interfere with previous commitments. Clinics for all returning cheerleaders and new recruits, including rising ninth-graders, are on Monday through Thursday, May 1 through 4, from 3:30 until 5 p.m. Tryouts for all returning cheerleaders and new recruits will be held during exam week on Tuesday, May 9, from 2 until 4 p.m. Rising ninth-graders who want to try out should join tryouts after school that day. Another tryout day will be held in August for additional recruits. Please contact Mrs. Ginny Richmond with any questions. To participate in sports or cheerleading, a student must meet academic and behavioral expectations, with at least a 2.0 GPA on the unweighted scale (high school) or at least a C average (middle school) from the previous grading period as well as an acceptable discipline record. In addition, a completed Athletic Participation Form for the 2017-2018 school year must be submitted to the middle or high school office before tryouts begin. (For spring cheerleading clinics, a 2016-2017 athletic participation form is required.) Please note that athletes without completed forms will not be permitted to try out or practice. The form is available on the Docs page. There is a $110 sports participation fee per sport for any student selected to be on an interscholastic sports or cheerleading team. The fee will be added to the student’s school bill once the season begins. |
