Students interested in playing interscholastic sports (middle or high school level) at BJA next year need to have a physical exam by a doctor sometime this summer and have that doctor complete and sign a portion of the Academy’s Athletic Participation Form. No student may try out or play sports at BJA without a completed sports form on file for the new school year. A form from the current school year will not cover a student in the fall. Forms are available at school and on the Docs page accessible from the Resources link on the BJA website.
Interscholastic boys soccer and girls volleyball tryouts and practices for the 2017-2018 school year will begin on Monday, August 7, for both middle and high school teams. Attendance at tryouts and practices is required for students who would like to be on a team. If there are scheduling conflicts, please contact Mr. Steve Tompkins, interim athletic director.
Cheerleading clinics begin on Monday, May 1. Students should plan to attend as many of the clinics as possible that do not interfere with previous commitments. Clinics for all returning cheerleaders and new recruits, including rising ninth-graders, are on Monday through Thursday, May 1 through 4, from 3:30 until 5 p.m. Tryouts for all returning cheerleaders and new recruits will be held during exam week on Tuesday, May 9, from 2 until 4 p.m. Rising ninth-graders who want to try out should join tryouts after school that day. Another tryout day will be held in August for additional recruits. Please contact Mrs. Ginny Richmond with any questions. To participate in sports or cheerleading, a student must meet academic and behavioral expectations, with at least a 2.0 GPA on the unweighted scale (high school) or at least a C average (middle school) from the previous grading period as well as an acceptable discipline record. In addition, a completed Athletic Participation Form for the 2017-2018 school year must be submitted to the middle or high school office before tryouts begin. (For spring cheerleading clinics, a 2016-2017 athletic participation form is required.) Please note that athletes without completed forms will not be permitted to try out or practice. The form is available on the Docs page. There is a $110 sports participation fee per sport for any student selected to be on an interscholastic sports or cheerleading team. The fee will be added to the student’s school bill once the season begins. Because the soccer and volleyball seasons are ongoing and because of the high number of students interested in trying out, tryouts will be held over a two-week period.
Tryouts will begin on Monday and Tuesday, October 24 and 24. Tryouts for students currently on the varsity soccer or volleyball teams (and continuing for those remaining from the earlier tryouts) will be on Monday and Tuesday, October 31 and November 1. To try out for a team, a high school student must have at least a 2.0 GPA (unweighted scale) for the most recent grading period (for the basketball tryouts that will be the grades from the upcoming report card), must have an acceptable disciplinary record, and must have submitted a completed athletic participation form for the current school year. If there are scheduling conflicts for the tryouts for any team, please contact Coach Don Ward in advance. Interscholastic sports are beginning! Tickets to Academy Lions regular season home games are $3 for adults and $2 for children with a maximum of $10 per family (immediate family members only).
Complimentary admission to Lions home games is available for the Academy family as detailed below. By showing his/her BJA/BJU ID card, a current BJA/BJU student, faculty, or staff member receives complimentary admission. A current high school student may use his/her ID card for complimentary admission for his/her parents and siblings. A Lions Athletic Family Pass provides complimentary admission for any current student (preschool through high school) with his/her parents and siblings. Pick up your family pass at an academy office. School ID cards and the family pass may not apply to admission for predetermined league playoff and/or championship games when league policy requires admission. This year’s South Carolina Association of Christian Schools soccer and volleyball tournament is being held at BJA. We are honored to be long-time members of SCACS and are thankful for the excellent leadership that SCACS provides here in South Carolina. Both of our teams have earned a place in the tournament. Come out to welcome our guests and to cheer on all the teams, especially our Lions! Do remember that a BJA ID card or a season pass cannot be used for free entrance to the tournament. The spectator charge covers one day and includes both sports: $3 for students, $5 for adults, and a maximum of $15 per family per day. Children under 5 are not charged.
