Music is in the air at BJA Elementary School! Our fine arts program welcomes new participants in both the band and orchestra program for our exciting Fall Semester 2015. Parents and students are welcome to stop by the cafetorium, meet the instrumental music teachers, and obtain information during our Back-to-School night on Friday, August 14. |
BJA will dismiss after a half day of school on Friday, May 8, to enable academy employees and families to attend the 2 p.m. Bob Jones University commencement exercises. The elementary, middle, and high school levels will dismiss at noon. See the school calendar on the website for altered schedule details. The preschool will continue as usual for the day. Late Stay will be offered at the elementary level; middle school students in late stay will join elementary late stay.
Friday, April 10, is a big day at BJA! After a morning of classes, the 1:30 p.m. Parade of Athletes kicks off the afternoon’s events, which continue until 4:45 p.m. Held at Bob Jones University’s Alumni Stadium, events will include various field event competitions for students in grades 1 through 6 in addition to inflatable attractions, concessions, and carnival booths with prizes. Parents of preschool students are invited to bring their children to participate in these activities as well. Read more.
Middle school students will run their annual Jog-a-Thon that afternoon, and it will be completed by the end of the regular school day. High school students have signed up to run field day events or help in other ways and to leave at the end of the school day or to help until 5:00 p.m. Of course, some of our seniors will be serving on the New York mission trip that week. We have had quite an active flu season, and as we enter into spring and the allergy season, please note the following reminders about illness and medication.
Students need to stay home if they have any of the following symptoms: fever over 100°, vomiting, frequent diarrhea, frequent cough, widespread rash, earache or severe headache. Symptoms should be absent for at least 24 hours before the student returns to school. Students need to be free of fever for 24 hours without the aid of fever-reducing medication. For elementary and middle school students, prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines needed at school should be sent in the original container accompanied by a completed medication form; forms need to be completed only once for each medication. Instructions regarding high school students are slightly different. Read more. We are looking forward to a healthy spring! If you have any questions, please contact our nurse, Mrs. Sue Biddle. In a continued effort to enhance school security, a new guest check-in system will be implemented beginning Monday, March 2, at the Primary Center and at the Elementary Main building. HallPass is an electronic guest tracking system used in schools across the United States. Using a guest’s photo ID, HallPass automatically recognizes an individual’s name and birthdate and generates a guest badge (good only for that day) that includes name, date, time, destination, and a picture. This badge format helps all school personnel as well as students quickly identify a guest and confirm that he/she has checked in through the office for a current visit. An added benefit is that during the check-in process, HallPass quickly determines if a guest is listed on the National Sex Offender Registry and/or the Violent Offender Against Youth Database and also notifies school administrators. We are excited to introduce this highly efficient and effective program as we continually address student safety. Beginning Monday, March 2, all guests to the Primary Center and Elementary Main will need to present a driver’s license or other government-issued photo ID when checking in. After the first visit with the new system in place, a guest will simply check in with office personnel to have his or her badge printed. At the end of all visits, guests should return to the office to check out.

The sixth-grade science fair is February 23-26 with a drop-in for family and friends from 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 26. We hope you can stop by to see the hard work of the fifth- and sixth-grade students.
This school year the three-year-old program moved into the Primary Center. While in the past this program was aligned under our daycare program, beginning in August 2015 it will fully align with our kindergarten programs. Although changing in name, the program it will remain age- and developmentally-appropriate, based primarily on fun children’s activities. Following are some similarities to and differences from the daycare program.
The annual elementary reading program kicks off Monday, January 12. This is our third year using the “Let’s RRRRead” program, established by a team of BJA teachers and administrators and geared specifically to the needs and interests of our own students. Throughout this 5-week program, students race to meet their weekly reading goals and claim prizes both for themselves and for their classes. Ready! Set! Read!
The elementary students have a regular schedule until Friday, December 19, when they will have class parties in the morning and will be dismissed at noon. Regular late stay is available until 5:30 p.m. that day.
School is dismissed at noon on September 24, and there is no school the following two days (Thursday and Friday, September 25 and 26) during the South Carolina Association of Christian Schools (SCACS) teachers convention.
Though the Academy has these days off, the University will have regular days of classes and work during SCACS, so BJU will provide child care for employee children (only) at the Primary Center for grades K4-K5 and at Elementary Main for grades 1-6. Regular late stay is available for all families until 5:30 p.m. following the half-day of school on Wednesday, September 24. |
