On Tuesday, December 6, at 7:45 p.m., the middle school band and orchestra combine forces to present a concert in the Academy Auditorium. The band will present a variety of Christmas melodies. An interesting medley weaves together three Christmas lullabies, while “Fantasy on an English Carol” uses modern rhythmic patterns to pull together melodic statements from all sections of the band. A challenging arrangement of the Appalachian Folk Carol “I Wonder as I Wander” presents the familiar and thoughtful melody with harmonic tension and tempo changes supporting the carol’s textual portrayal of Christ’s birth being for the purpose of His death on the cross. The orchestra will present both Christmas pieces and other numbers such as “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” and a waltz from “Sleeping Beauty.”
The eighth-grade students have regular classes on Monday, December 12, and will be on the Williamsburg Trip Tuesday through Friday. The seventh-grade students have a regular schedule until Friday, December 16, when they will be dismissed at noon. Regular late stay is available until 5:30 p.m. that day.
