On Tuesday, December 6, at 7:45 p.m., the middle school band and orchestra combine forces to present a concert in the Academy Auditorium. The band will present a variety of Christmas melodies. An interesting medley weaves together three Christmas lullabies, while “Fantasy on an English Carol” uses modern rhythmic patterns to pull together melodic statements from all sections of the band. A challenging arrangement of the Appalachian Folk Carol “I Wonder as I Wander” presents the familiar and thoughtful melody with harmonic tension and tempo changes supporting the carol’s textual portrayal of Christ’s birth being for the purpose of His death on the cross. The orchestra will present both Christmas pieces and other numbers such as “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” and a waltz from “Sleeping Beauty.”
The middle and high school bands open the Academy’s concert season with separate concerts on Friday, November 14, in the Academy Auditorium. The middle school band begins the evening with a 6:30 p.m. concert, and the high school band follows at 7:30 p.m. This fall's concerts feature American and patriotic music. The music in these concerts will be a celebration of Veteran's Day week and the 200th Anniversary of the writing of America's national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Songs from our heritage—from Colonial days to folk songs to cowboy songs to “Stars and Stripes Forever”—will provide an enjoyable time for all listeners as they think about our nation and what it means to us.
