Your children, our students, have the Scriptures and can read them; but many of them often do not understand what they read. How can they, except someone guide them? The word “guide” in this verse means “to lead or show the way or to teach.” As parents and teachers, is not that our calling, our ministry? There is a challenge for us all to be careful not to assume that our children always understand what they read. Consider passages shared in family devotions and school memory verses. We may be asking students to think about and memorize what they do not understand. It would be as if Philip had climbed into the chariot and told the Ethiopian, “Just keep reading and memorize those verses.” Would that have helped? We need to ask questions concerning the Bible passages our students are reading to determine their level of understanding. We need to be prepared to explain not only the meaning of verses but also ways in which those verses apply to their lives. Tremendous opportunities lie before us. We have children who need to understand and who need us to guide them. Let us, like Philip, be eager and willing to be used of God. Who knows how a God-given understanding of some verse you explain might change a life and what impact that changed life might have?
